Our conversations covered various topics, including puppy love and the city landscape, the past and future of BUDA as a city art organization, the function of community space and art, Flemish identity, as well as the future of Kortrijk.
Originating from the idea of deep mapping, I emphasized one’s connection to the place and culture. Therefore, I invite my interviewees to bring me to a site that connects them. It can be a place relating to daily life, personal memories, a rumor, a special background… etc.
Everybody will have questions relating to:
Where are you from? How would you describe that city?
Why do you choose Kortrijk? How would you describe it?
How would you describe yourself in the city you are in?
We used to start our meetings at BUDA, our workplace, and then walk to the destination. On the way to the site, we would begin our conversation with “What brought you to this city, Kortrijk?” and discuss each other's originality. When we arrived, we observed and felt the space together. We also conducted our interview documentation there, where we listened to their stories and talked about the place. After each sharing, I made a dance honoring that story. The movement score and texture were further evaluated in the live dance later.

In one of our interviews, we went to a park where the local primary school usually went to. We accidentally met a group of primary students there. Although there was a language barrier, they were willing to share their feelings about the current and future of their living city. interviewees included Syrian refugees, Philippine migrants, Belgian locals…It was a precious talk with the young generation.
The footage including the interviews and dance videos will be further edited into a creative documentary of Kortrijk/ this production.
